Our Entryway Closet Refresh with Ikea, Target & More!
Besides our office, which is an ongoing constant project of it’s own, our entryway closet became a catchall. Not sure what to do with some random item? It’ll go in the closet. Don’t feel like taking your shoes upstairs to your own closet? Stick them in the hall closet.
But now it’s overflowing, and the door requires a little extra PUSH to close completely.
I’ve been frustrated with it for some time. With a trip to Ikea coming up, I knew this was my chance to do a little entryway closet refresh.
We Need a Functioning Entryway Closet
What do we want out of this small closet?
This small closet needs to hold our jackets, a few pair of shoes, the steam mop, vacuum, and some dog stuff like toys, belly bands, and the ridiculous clothes I insist they have.
But like, c’mon. The dog clothes are adorable…
Products Purchased
To complete our refresh, I used some items we already had, and some new items. I switched out the 6 cube shelf I had in the closet from Target with a 3 cube shelf brought down from my own closet. That 6 cube shelf will be reused in another project we hope to get done soon. With that we had storage bins also from Target and two from the Dollar Tree.
My Ikea trip resulted in the Trones Shoe Cabinet 2-pack and the Bumerang Wooden Hanger 8 pack. With hanging heavier jackets and coats in this closet, I figured we needed heavier and sturdier hangers than the plastic ones we’ve been using (and breaking) for years.
The Refresh
To start this quick afternoon project I emptied out the entryway closet, vacuumed the inside and wiped down the floor. From years of keeping shoes in there, there are some scuff marks which don’t easily wipe away, and will eventually need a paint touch up. For now a quick wipe of a Lysol wipe will do.
I went with white with as much as I could because it is a very small space. I felt like darker bins or the darker shoe cabinet would have made the closet itself feel even smaller. The idea for this closet is bright.
Since we keep shoes in here, I always have an air freshener in the closet, and will toss fabric softener sheets in the sneakers from time to time.
Next was figuring out where to put the cube shelf and shoe cabinet. Originally I hoped they would fit next to each other, but I misjudged the width of the closet. So I turned the shoe cabinet to the side, then made sure they would still open with the cube shelf in it’s location.
Success! They fit. Now time to fill the closet.
A few shoes for each of us fit in the shoe cabinet. The dogs toys, grooming supplies, poop bags, bellybands (we have a senior pup who needs them sometimes) and clothes fit. The steam mop and supplies fit, and the vacuum fits. Everything fits and the door closes with ease! There are some shelves above where the coats are hung, but those are mostly Matt’s go to hats, some sunglasses, and the disposable belly bands for vacation are located.
While this was a quick project which doesn’t seem like much, it was a daily annoyance that was an easy fix. The whole refresh took me about an hour.

Entryway Closet Refresh – Complete….For Now
This project isn’t fully complete…just yet. We have these Bastis hooks from Ikea which were purchased last year. I need to work on getting those up to hold leashes. They’re dog butt hooks, we had to have them.
Entryway Closet Refresh – Final Thoughts
I feel like this is a never ending project depending on our changing needs. The shoe cabinets do give it a much cleaner look, now let’s check back in a few weeks to see how many extra pairs of shoes we have tossed in there!
